We need a Savior because we are all sinners. We have all broken God’s law, and done things we knew were wrong – like lying. Have you ever been lied about? How did it affect your relationship with that person? Sin not only damages earthly relationships, it separates us from God. God is perfect and pure. He commands us not to bear false witness against our neighbor, because He is a God of truth who protects truth. He commands us not to murder, because He is the Giver of life. He commands us not to steal, because He gives property and rights. All sin is an attack on God. Our sin leaves us guilty and separate from Him.
People are in danger because they don’t believe they deserve punishment. They think their good will outweigh their bad. “Good” people commit crimes, and are punished by courts of law. The same is true in God’s court. Our world is in a mess because of sin. It ruins lives, and God will judge it. He wouldn’t be just if He let people get by with lying about you. God sees our every word, thought, and deed. Someday we will all stand before Him and give an account. The consequences of breaking God’s law are death and eternal punishment in hell. “All liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death” (Rev. 21:8).
Jesus is more than a man. He claimed to be God, and proved it by His miracles, perfect life, and resurrection from the dead. Christ died for our sins. He took our punishment and sin upon Himself when He died on the cross. The Father sent the Son to be the Savior of the world. Why? “For God so loved the world that gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (Jn. 3:16). If we were good enough to save ourselves, Jesus wouldn’t have needed to die. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life and no man comes to the Father but by Him.
